through visionary, creative and innovative programming
and through Festival related events during the year.

Brief History

Orcas Island Chamber Music Festival celebrated its 10th Anniversary in 2007. Each season the two-week summer Chamber Music Festival features internationally renowned musicians, many of whom are drawn to return to perform with Core Ensemble members Aloysia Friedmann and Jon Kimura Parker. Ms. Friedmann and Mr. Parker also serve as Artistic Director and Artistic Advisor, respectively.

OICMF exposes audiences and community members to a broad classical repertoire plus exploratory and world music, to musicians of extraordinary talent, and to compositions from a broad range or periods and styles. Throughout the year OICMF offers opportunities for substantive interaction between artists and community members.

Accomplishments

Since its debut in 1998, OICMF has gained a reputation for providing sold-out houses with world-class music, all within a friendly, relaxed, and intimate atmosphere during the two-week, 10-12 concert Festival schedule.

Exceptional innovations in programming feature both traditional and contemporary repertoire, drawing islanders and visitors to return in capacity numbers. The majority of concerts are performed in the intimate 213-seat hall of Orcas Center and occasionally in the historic 105-seat sanctuary of Emmanuel Episcopal Church, the Victorian Valley Chapel, or on the Village Green in Eastsound.

Along with concert programming for the Festival, Ms. Friedmann is committed to education which, in 2006-07 inspired the IM: In Music outreach program for school students and community. The inaugural year of IM: In Music was funded through grants from the Orcas Island Community Foundation, Gould Family Foundation, and the National Endowment for the Arts. The Festival’s Orcas~trations series, Family Concert, Music Lovers’ Seminars, open rehearsals, and partnerships with island non-profits and schools give on-going testimony to the commitment of engaging people of all ages in classical music traditions.

Incorporated in 1998, the Orcas Island Chamber Music Festival (OICMF) is a 501(c)(3) organization. Tax ID # 91-1886480.

After many years of planning, OICMF has released “The First Ten Years,” a DVD/CD that imparts the story of the Festival’s beginnings and growth through a combination of filmed sequences overlaid and supported by CD quality recordings of concerts and events. Memories and anticipations of the Festival are seamlessly woven as musicians, community, and the island itself speak eloquently for the vitality of chamber music.
