IM: In Music
From the very beginning, it has been a goal of founder and Artistic Director Aloysia Friedmann and the Board of the Orcas Island Chamber Music Festival to provide access into the world of chamber music for all ages and throughout the year on Orcas Island. The early years of the Festival were filled with the planning and development of an exceptional summer chamber music concert series. Gradually elements of music education have become more evident, growing from occasional Pre-Concert Lectures to a fully developed Musicians-in-Residence program for music students in the public schools and community musicians. Providing inspiration, skills building opportunities, plus mentoring for island musicians and teachers, IM: In Music touches the lives of islanders of all ages in all seasons.
A special project to support the strings program in the public school has resulted in a library of video demonstrations of musicians playing scales for the violin, viola and cello. These practice aids are available for classroom use or for individual student accountability.

Our summer Festival concerts are preceded by authoritative Pre- and Post-Concert Lectures. Music Lovers’ Seminars attract the curious of mind. Session pairs or single sessions feature speakers presenting in-depth 3-hour session on the summer concert repertoire and all things musical.
|
| Master Classes inspire and guide community musicians seeking to improve. Individual sessions or small ensemble work classes are quickly filled. |

Musicians-in-Residence visit during the school year to work with music students K-12. Week-long residencies as well as frequent classroom visits offer students and teachers the opportunity to learn from highly skilled artists. Recent website development supports practice accountability and at-home study. |
IM: In Music for Young Ones has created a shared music literature and resource base for our island preschool children and teachers. Visiting musicians have credentials in early childhood learning and development. |

Summertime Tune-Up Sessions occur in the midst of the exciting concert season. Our youthful participants meet guest artists and share the momentum of the performance experience from early morning practice, lunchtime break with Festival musicians, rehearsal intensity, and the excellence of the evening’s concert. |
P.S.
It’s important to note that working in cooperation with the island’s school staff and music programs has been very rewarding for not only the students but OICMF’s guest and visiting musicians as well. In the mix of this unusually productive collaboration, island community musicians are often present as volunteers in support of our young musicians.
A hearty THANK YOU! to all who have invested in this innovative arts education offering for young people, community members, and Festival visitors.
